Redwoods plays green

A Walnut Grove golf course takes further steps to become more eco-friendly.

It's hard to envision a greener spot than a golf course - an oasis in the midst of nature, with green trees, green fairways, and the greens themselves, not to mention all the other native plants.

But the golf course on 88th Avenue is making further strides to be even greener, or should they say eco-friendly.

This summer, the 177-acre Redwoods Golf Course in Walnut Grove has jumped aboard an Audubon International green initiative.

Audubon's Green Golfer Pledge drive began worldwide in 2007, but The Redwoods jumped aboard this year in its further efforts to preserve the environment, explained Redwoods managing director Doug Hawley.

It's a simple pledge program designed to minimize the impact golfers and golf course operations have on the environment. Participants agree to a simple set of rules that highlight proper care of the course to protect local plants and animal life, Hawley elaborated.

Golfers who take the pledge are asked, for instance, to avoid environmentally sensitive areas, appreciate and protect native plants and wildlife, always use on-course trash and recycling bins, and repair ball marks and divots to ensure healthier grass growth.

"We feel this pledge is an excellent way to help our environment and preserve our favourite game," he said.

"Not only is the pledging golfer rewarded with a course that is exceptionally eco-friendly, but those who enter have a chance to win tickets to the 2010 U.S. Open in Pebble Beach."

Hawley noted that the prize has definitely sweetened the pot for some golfers who may have been a little hesitant to sign up.

Last year, The Redwoods also participated in an environmental impact study, and as a result of the finding, Hawley and his 100-plus staff committed to being greener and actually strive to be carbon neutral by summer 2010.

They've launched an intense recycling programs, and are also attempting to reduce garbage, increase composting, use energy-efficient appliances, install light timers and sensors, and landscape with more drought-tolerant plants.

"We want to see golf reach its full potential in environmental stewardship, so we invite all golfers in the Lower Mainland to challenge themselves to play a greener round that will preserve our game for generations to come," Hawley said.
